Minmetals Financial Center
LERA was the structural engineer for this 29-story, 476-ft (145-m), 409,000-sf (38,000-sm) office tower, featuring a curved facade that evokes billowing sails. Curved planes of blue glass wrap the exterior, exposing the building’s structural cross-bracing, and the lower stories are clad in stone, grounding the glass tower and producing a sense of solidity.
The structural design furthers the nautical theme via exterior lateral bracing: two X-braced groupings of 12 floors each are separated by three horizontal single-story braced truss floors, recalling a framework of nautical ties and battens. Aimed at LEED Gold certification, the tower incorporates green design elements, such as passive shading devices and operable windows.
